PUR Bound Brochures Printing

If you want to create a high-impact magazine, booklet, portfolio or manual with a thick, durable spine, look no further than PUR bound brochures. PUR stands for Polyurethane-Reactive and has in more recent years replaced the less resilient adhesive EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate).

PUR brochures use only half the adhesive and yet achieve improved binding strength. PUR perfect bound books will always have a square spine, even on the thinnest of brochures.

At Print Stafford, we create soft cover books with premium PUR glue for the perfect binding. To achieve the best binding technique, the pages are stacked together in a block and then squared off for a neat finish before being glued together along the spine with extremely strong PUR adhesive.

The printed cover is then placed around the pages and glued to the spine as well. Some of the many benefits to our paperback PUR books include temperature resistance, long lasting durability and flexible spines that won’t crack or leave pages falling out.

What is PUR Book Binding?

PUR binding is a type of paperback or soft cover book binding method that uses Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) adhesive.

It is referred to as a form of perfect binding since the pages and cover are glued together at one side, the spine, while the other three sides are trimmed straight for a clean, professional look. PUR bound brochures are considered superior to all other softcover books which use alternative adhesives.

Perfect Binding vs PUR Binding?

When it comes to perfect bound brochure printing, there are several binding techniques that can be used. One of the cheaper but significantly less durable options is perfect binding using Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA).

This technique is commonly used for binding magazines and thread-sewn books but many find that pages are easily pulled out. On the other hand, PUR bound books are glued using PolyUrethane Reactive adhesives which is considerably harder wearing, resistant to changing temperatures and more flexible.

They say PUR binding is 2.5 stronger than perfect binding using EVA, particularly when it comes to paperback bound brochures with more pages and/or thicker paper.

What are the benefits of PUR Bound Brochures?

Square Spine – Since PUR bound books use less glue than EVA, it makes it possible to achieve a square spine even on paperback books and soft back brochures that have a low page count. PUR is also a clear adhesive so the glue cannot be seen whereas EVA appears amber or white

Binding Strength – PUR binding is a stronger adhesive compared to other perfect binding methods and so you can expect a more durable bond between pages. Having superior binding strength is essential, especially if you’re wanting a paperback brochure that will last a long time and give off a quality feel in the hands of your customers.

Improved Flexibility – Due to its increased durability and the smaller amount of glue used, PUR bound brochures are also very flexible. This means you can open wide and press down flat a PUR book without worrying it will crack or split.

Temperature Resistant – Perfect bound books using EVA are not ideal in environments of extreme heat, since the adhesive is designed to be reactivated when warmed. PUR on the other hand does not react to temperature changes and will provide incredible resilience in both hot and cold climates.

Better Adherent – Finally, EVA adhesive can’t be used on all paper stocks, where as PUR bound brochures can be printed with coated and uncoated paper types. They also work well with paperback books detailed with heavy ink coverage and finishes like Spot UV and Foiling.
